Sat. Apr 15/07 - Mosport Spring Classic Road Race
Hi all – just a quick summary of the Mosport race a few weekends ago.
The weekend was very nast y weather with a bit of rain, a bit of snow, and a whole lot of wind (probably gusting to 35 km/hr). the temperature hovered around + 5 degrees all day.
The day started out with Liz Hopkins drumming up the courage to ride Masters woman and getting up at 6 AM or so to get to the race on time. That all worked very well until she realized that her shoes had been left at home! When all was said and done, she probably had the best luck of the day given the racing weather!
Master 2 race had 2 Team RACE participants (Chris Chambers and Steve Coulson).. After mixing it up and taking some mighty pulls up front, both Steve and Chris ended up in the pack sprint and finished well up in the top 30.
The Masters 1 race had about 80 riders take the start. Team RACE was well represented with Stef Kramer, Dan Lefebvre, Hamish Gordon, Jamie Layfield and Mike Moore all ready to start. I had my bike there and almost psyched myself to get on it, but ended up playing support at the side of the road!
The race was pretty fast and hard with a number of attempts at various breakaways. Unfortunately Mike Moore broke a spoke after only 2 laps but the rest of the team was sticking well to the front to cover any moves. The winning move went up the road with about 6-7 laps left in the race. It consisted of 10 riders and Hamish had been successful in jumping into it. While Stef, Jamie and Dan dissuaded any kind of organized chase, the break stretched out their lead to over 2 minutes. Hamish had good legs at the end, and finished with a strong 2nd out of a smaller group that had broken free on the last lap from the initial break.
Things are looking good after 2 races. Clearly Team RACE has a lot of dangerous riders who can possibly pick up a win on any given day.
Next race is April 28th in Calalooga (I know that isn’t spelled right…J ). Niagara Classic is only a month away!
Cheers,
Paul D
